Flash vs Silverlight – past 10 months evolution

silverlight vs flash2With so much talk currently going on about Silverlight at the PDC, I thought it would be interesting to see how the past 10 months has looked in terms of market penetration for Flash and Silverlight. The following snap shots are taken from riastats.com. Looks like Silverlight has gained around 15% marketshare in the past 10 months which is quite impressive. Also worth noticing the huge difference in penetration for flash player v10. Adobe has really succeeded in upgrading most clients to version 10. For the record; the top snapshot is taken 19 Jan and the bottom one is taken 19 Nov.

I wonder if Silverlight share increase has anything to do with Windows 7 release? It’s not installed by default, but I am guessing that more folks are inclined to install new software on a new OS

fwiw, these services seem to be measure slightly different things, so it’s not surprising they diverge on “marketshare”:

    A) the ongoing third-party consumer audits commissioned by Adobe survey 2000 consumers and what they can view.

    B) RIAstats.com installs a sniffer on many websites, and so measures their incoming traffic… differs from (A) in that it includes mobile & search spiders, eg.

    C) I didn’t see a “methodology” page for StatOwl.com, although their front page says they collect data from “numerous web sites”.

There were Silverlight stats mentioned this week like “33% of all desktop and mobile” and “45% of all desktop” but I didn’t find a source link where these numbers were explained.

People usually start adopting new Flash features in earnest once audience-support levels get above 80%. QuickTime and Shockwave remain above 50%.
